Edging is necessary when the boundary between your lawn and adjacent areas — garden beds, walkways, driveways, or patios — starts to blur, either because grass is creeping where it shouldn't be or because the visual line has become ragged enough to make the whole yard look unkempt.

Signs edging is needed:

Grass is spreading laterally into garden beds or over hard surfaces

The lawn border looks uneven or undefined

Mulch and soil are migrating out of beds onto the lawn or walkway

Weeds are establishing along the edge where grass and bed meet

The overall yard looks messy despite being mowed and maintained
